Wherever you look, that’s where you’ll go

Hi Friends,

I’ve really missed you these past few weeks! Sadly, my family and I finally caught Covid and it’s hit us pretty hard. We’re all exhausted and battling lingering sickness.

I haven’t been reading lately, and because reading fuels my writing, I haven’t been doing that either. But I’m tired of being in this fog and I’m tired of letting the pandemic take things from me. So, I wrote a few thoughts that I hope encourage you this week. ❤️

For a while there, I was really into mountain biking.

This is a lesson I learned early on: Wherever you look, that’s where you’ll go.

I figured this out while riding a narrow track that curved along the side of a hill. I took my eyes off the track, only for a moment, curiously peering over the edge of the trail as I rode.

I didn’t even notice that I’d tilted my handlebars to the left, the direction my eyes had wandered.

Suddenly, I was tumbling off the side of the hill, headfirst into the thicket below. Though unharmed, I was totally shocked. How did this happen?

I got distracted.

I lost focus.

I took my eyes off of what mattered and I paid for it.

Wherever you look, that’s where you’ll go.

Our eyes, where we look, where we focus, will guide our actions, attitudes, and thoughts. We are naturally drawn to the object of our attention.

We must be mindful. Our eyes wander easily — just like mine did, moments before I fell off that hill! Stay fixated on beauty and goodness and light so that you’re not pulled down into the momentary, fleeting distractions.

Turn off the news.

Put your phone down.

Don’t look over the edge. Don’t get sucked into unnecessary things that will weigh your soul down. Keep your eyes steady. Lift your gaze above it all and look to the light.

Wherever you look, that’s where you’ll go.
